Authorities say 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allan breached a checkpoint carrying a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun, a .38 semi-automatic pistol and three knives. He shot an agent in the chest area of his bulletproof vest, was tackled shortly after and taken into custody. Police put the hotel perimeter on lockdown.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said investigators believe the suspect targeted administration officials. Allan was charged with attempting to assassinate the president, interstate weapons transport and discharging a firearm during a violent crime. President Trump later called the suspect "a sick person," praised the vest that protected the agent and described the event as a "traumatic experience."
